Biography

Jean Campbell has been practicing yoga since 1995. Coming to yoga from a background of martial arts she was instantly inspired by its practice and philosophy. She began her training in Iyengar yoga, teaching in Melbourne, Australia for 3 years before travelling to the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India in 1999 to further her yoga studies.

On her return from India Jean practiced Ashtanga yoga at the Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Melbourne, and in 2000 she completed the Certificate IV Yoga Teacher Training Course (Ashtanga/Iyengar) with Louisa Sear director of Yoga Arts in Byron Bay. Jean then taught at the Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Melbourne for Greg and Tracey Cooper - before, during and after the birth of her son.

In 2002, Jean and her partner opened the Ashtanga Yoga Studio Newcastle which flourished under their guidance for seven years.

In January 2005 she travelled again to India, this time to Mysore to study with Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Rangaswamy at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute.

Since 2006, Jean has been teaching the Anatomy and Asana components on Lance’s Inspya Teacher Trainings both in Australia and internationally.

Now living in Sydney, Jean has opened a small studio (Sydney Yoga Shala) running general classes, private classes, workshops, intensives and anatomy training.

Jean’s Anatomy background:

Jean’s initial interest in anatomy arose due to injuries she had, despite being a dedicated practitioner of yoga. She couldn’t understand why so many people (including herself) who practised so frequently and with such dedication seemed to get hurt on the mat. This led her to research into the fundamentals of anatomy, movement and traditional approaches to yoga practice - then many years of self-practice to test and implement these principles. Now she specialises in the principles of yoga therapy to help bring balance and health.

By liasing with body and mind specialists such as chiropractors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, physicians, psychologists and others from the scientific community she is able to broaden her knowledge and verify safe and effective methods of yoga practice.

Special interests that Jean brings to her teaching

Anatomy, Ayurveda, Philosophy

Jean’s approach to teaching:
Jean believes that anatomy does not have to be boring! All the information we learn can only be useful if we are able to apply it in our practice or our lives. This is the basis for Jean’s teaching. Practical useful information that can be directly applied to your yoga practice to create a stronger, healthier, more mobile body as well as creating calmer states of mind to help us live a full and meaningful life.

What Jean enjoys about training future teachers:

People who decide to do a teacher training obviously have a great interest in yoga. Jean loves to share her passion for yoga with others and explore all the possibilities that yoga offers. Seeing the dedication and enthusiasm of students is inspiring. A teacher training is an opportunity to put oneself in a “yoga bubble”, allowing time and space for introspection, learning and change that we rarely experience in our day to day lives. To be a part of this process is a joy and a privilege.
